a great program at historic Paulsdale for Mother's Day.
Costume designer and
historian Barbara Meyer Darlin will present The Gibson Girl Friday
Meets the Victorian Woman, an on-stage transformation from society
to the white-collar working girl of 1900.
In this program, Ms. Darlin demonstrates what
it was like for Victorian woman to go to work every day wearing
corsets and layers of tight, restrictive clothing. Then she compares that
life to a society lady’s leisurely lifestyle and glamorous but tortuous
fashions. During her presentation, Ms. Darlin will change outfits, from
office clerk to a wealthy lady, showing the audience two completely
different fashion looks from the turn-of-the-century, complete with
unmentionables.
