About the Author:
Mary Walton
|
|
A Woman’s Crusade:
Alice Paul and the Battle for the Ballot,
to be published by Palgrave Macmillan in August, 2010, is Mary
Walton’s fifth book. A former staff writer for many years at the
Philadelphia Inquirer, she is the author of three
business books, including a business best seller on the life and
teachings of quality expert W. Edwards Deming. Walton was born
in Honolulu on November 19, 1941, three weeks before the attack
on Pearl Harbor, where her father, a Navy diver, was
stationed. After the war she and her parents moved frequently
until her father retired from the Navy, and they settled in
Miami. She graduated from Harvard University and explored
playwriting, advertising, social work and community action
before settling into a career as a journalist. In 1992 she left
the Inquirer to write books and magazine articles. Her
stories have appeared in the New York Times and other
major newspapers, the American Journalism Review,
Harper’s, Washington Monthly and Washingtonian.
She and her husband, Charles Layton, another Inquirer veteran,
live in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.
Visit Mary Walton's website at

API will have copies of Mary's book
available for purchase ($28) on

An Exploritas @ Medford Leas
(formerly Elderhostel)
Program:
Women
in Social & Political Leadership
In 2009, a
record number of women were awarded Nobel Prizes - in
literature, economics, medicine and chemistry. With women also
occupying positions such as the U.S. Secretary of State,
justices of the Supreme Court, as well as heads of state in
Latin America, Africa and Asia, the growing power and influence
of women in today's world is undeniable. Success stories like
these would not be possible were it not for the courage,
discipline and sacrifice of generations of women stretching from
Seneca Falls to the halls of power of the 21st century. Join us
for this national series, as we take a comprehensive look at
women's history and make a call to service to inspire the next
generation of women in social and political leadership.

Celebrate the 25th
Anniversary of the Alice Paul Institute. Our Annual
Meeting at the Mount Laurel Library, will feature a program with
author
Catherine Gourley who will discuss her new book,
Gibson Girls and Suffragists,
the first volume in a five book nonfiction series,
Images of Women in the Twentieth Century.
Written particularly for girls ages 10 and up,
this
series explores how popular culture has portrayed women in the
early twentieth century; from Gibson and Christy girls
to Suffragists, Flappers, College and Factory girls.
We will also feature a
special presentation highlighting some of API's accomplishments
over the past 25 years. |

Purchase a
copy of the book in our
gift shop for the special price of $32.
If you would
like to reserve a copy to pick up at the Annual Meeting, call
