To remind us all of the importance of Election Day, API will host a movie night at historic Paulsdale.  HBO's Iron-Jawed Angels (2004) tells the remarkable story of the aggressive women's suffrage campaign led by Alice Paul (Hillary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Conner).  In their resourceful campaign for the vote, the two led suffragists to parade, petition, and picket the White House in 1917.  Enduring arrests, brutal beatings and harrowing forced-feedings in jail, the suffragists of the National Woman's Party carried on, determined to win their right to vote.

Light refreshments will be served.

A former staff writer for many years at the Philadelphia Inquirer, she is the author of three business books, including a business best seller on the life and teachings of quality expert W. Edwards Deming.  Walton was born in Honolulu on November 19, 1941, three weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor, where her father, a Navy diver, was stationed.   After the war she and her parents moved frequently until her father retired from the Navy, and they settled in Miami.  She graduated from Harvard University and explored playwriting, advertising, social work and community action before settling into a career as a journalist.  In 1992 she left the Inquirer to write books and magazine articles. Her stories have appeared in the New York Times and other major newspapers, the American Journalism Review, Harper’s, Washington Monthly and Washingtonian.  She and her husband, Charles Layton, another Inquirer veteran, live in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.

An Exploritas @ Medford Leas (formerly Elderhostel) Program: Women in Social & Political Leadership

In 2009, a record number of women were awarded Nobel Prizes - in literature, economics, medicine and chemistry. With women also occupying positions such as the U.S. Secretary of State, justices of the Supreme Court, as well as heads of state in Latin America, Africa and Asia, the growing power and influence of women in today's world is undeniable. Success stories like these would not be possible were it not for the courage, discipline and sacrifice of generations of women stretching from Seneca Falls to the halls of power of the 21st century. Join us for this national series, as we take a comprehensive look at women's history and make a call to service to inspire the next generation of women in social and political leadership.

Paulsdale
is one of four women's history sites in Burlington County that will participate in the
Writing Women Back Into History Self-Guided Driving Tour  This one-day event, sponsored by the Burlington County Freeholders in honor of women's history month, features a self-guided driving tour to four sites to learn about NJ women including Agnes Gilkerson Smith (Historic Smithville Mansion Eastampton), Miriam Harker (Peachfield, Westampton), Delia Biddle Pugh and Aline K. Wolcott (Burlington County Historical Society, Burlington City)  and of course, Alice Stokes Paul (Paulsdale, Mount Laurel).  For a map and more information about this driving tour, please call 609-265-5068.

Enjoy a tour on a beautiful spring afternoon. Tours begin with brief show about Alice Paul's life and work. Guests then go on an outdoor walk around the property to learn about the farm that once surrounded Paulsdale. Inside the house, tourists will learn about the Paul family's daily life in the house, the restoration/rehabilitation of the site and its present day use as a girl's leadership center.

Visitors enjoy a tour conducted by tour guide
Bill Joyce.

Though the house has no period furnishings, there is plenty of history within its walls including dozens of historic photographs and documents.

Tours begin at 12:00 and 1:00 pm. It is recommended that you arrive 5-10 minutes before your tour to sign our guest book and pay for your tour at the gift shop. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes that can get dirty!

Group tours (min. 8 people) may be scheduled for Monday through Friday by appointment. To schedule your group's tour, call Kris Myers at 856-231-1885 or email kmyers@alicepaul.org.
