Looking at Careers fosters career and leadership development in senior high school students.  Students will be exposed to a variety of career possibilities by introducing them to women who are leaders in their chosen careers.  The program includes distinct components:

  • A panel presentation featuring several women who take a leadership role in a New Jersey industry/business/organization.  Each panelist will describe the career path she chose and why, the opportunities in her field, the degree to which her education and training prepared her for her current position, and her sense of responsibility for the development of her profession through leadership roles in professional associations, mentoring programs, etc.
  • An opportunity for students to ask questions and talk to the individual panelists.
  • A short presentation by a librarian and/or a guidance counselor to review the reference materials, publications and web resources that can help students to research career possibilities.

The panelists are encouraged to follow up on the workshop by providing opportunities for further student involvement such as e-groups, tours of their workplaces, job shadowing, summer internships, volunteer opportunities, individual mentoring.

Goals of the Program

  • Students will learn about a variety of careers and the training needed to pursue them.
  • Students will learn the value of self-guided career development.
  • Students will learn the benefits of taking a leadership role in a profession.
  • The panel session will promote women as role models of effective leadership.
  • Students and parents will learn about available resources for career research.
  • Adult participants will benefit from the opportunity to network with each other as well as mentor the next generation of leaders.
