A Night of Art Song

Join APC and the Kappa Alpha chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota at Rowan University of a celebration of women in music. This program features works by women composers sung by students from Rowan University.

All proceeds will benefit Sigma Alpha Iota and the Alice Paul Center for Gender Justice.

Performers:

Hanna Shein is a junior studying at Rowan University with Lauren Athey-Janka and Christopher Hochstuhl. She studies Vocal Performance and Music Education and lives on stage. She is passionate about bringing the work of female composers to life in new and exciting ways. Previous credits include Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Kate (The Yeoman of the Guard), etc. Come see her as Cinderella at Rowan University April 10-12th! She is also hosting a personal recital on April 18th in Boyd Recital Hall.

Makayli Matias is a sophomore Vocal Music Education major at Rowan University studying voice with Lauren Athey-Janka. She performs in several university ensembles, including Concert Choir, Voces Chamber Ensemble, and Collegium Musicum, and serves on the executive boards of the ACDA and NAfME student chapters. Makayli is passionate about music education and fostering a love of music in young musicians. She is very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this recital.

Jessenia Zavala is a junior Vocal Music Education major at Rowan University. She studies under Professor Marian Stieber, sings with Concert Choir and Collegium Musicum, serves as treasurer for both ACDA and NAfME, and works as a student assistant for the Rowan Youth Choir. Originally transferring from Ocean County College, Jessenia has enjoyed performing in a variety of settings at Rowan. Recent performances include the Illumination Recital, Emily Dickinson in Art Song, ACDA’s Fall 2025 Cabaret, Fall 2025 Opera Scenes, and Hansel and Gretel (Sandman). She is so happy to be performing tonight and would like to thank her family and friends for their continued love and support!

Vera Caruso is a junior music and English major at Rowan University. Studying classical voice under Marian Steiber and jazz voice under Annie Sciolla, she has become a versatile vocalist and musician. Vera’s interests intersect when it comes to poetry, feminism, and music, the catalysts for this project. She is involved in many ensembles and organizations at Rowan, such as Rowan’s concert choir, opera company, Voces chamber ensemble, Collegium Musicum, and clubs such as American Choral Director’s Association and Sigma Alpha Iota.

Ellie Giordano (she/her) is in her fourth semester of the Instrumental Music Education program at Rowan University. She studies clarinet with Professor Antonello Dimatteo and is also completing a Certificate of Undergraduate Study in Vocal Performance under the direction of Dr. Michael Scarcelle.

During the current academic year, Ellie has had the opportunity to perform in a wide range of ensembles, including Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, the Rowan University Marching Band, and Symphony Orchestra. Her leadership roles include Editor of Sigma Alpha Iota’s Kappa Alpha Chapter, Clarinet Section Leader and Storage Co-Captain for the Rowan University Marching Band, and Community Assistant for the Department of Residential Learning and University Housing.

Ellie values being actively engaged in both the music department and the broader Rowan University community. She hopes you enjoy tonight’s recital and encourages you to support the performers by attending the Rowan University production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, running April 10–12.
