2024 Alice Paul Trailblazer Award Recipient: Assemblywoman Carol Murphy

State Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy just won re-election to a fourth term representing the Seventh Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly and announced recently she would seek the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s Third Congressional District. Elected in 2017, Assemblywoman Murphy has quickly rose up the ranks and is now the highest ranking elected woman in the history of South Jersey. Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carol is the daughter of a Bronze Star US Army Veteran.

Through her father’s service in the military, she learned early on the importance of public service and led to her spending the entirety of her career devoted to helping others.

Prior to serving in the state legislature, Assemblywoman Murphy worked at the New Jersey Schools Development Authority, serving as the Community Relations Manager where she established a transparent government records division, and worked closely with communities to address local and environmental concerns. These efforts led to the building and modernizing of public schools improving classrooms across New Jersey.

As a chief of staff and policy director in the state legislature, Assemblywoman Murphy worked on major public policy initiatives that included pay equity, fair wages, women’s reproductive healthcare, gun violence, state debt reduction, prescription drug affordability, tax relief and economic growth.

In the state legislature, Assemblywoman Murphy has distinguished herself as a prolific lawmaker having authored laws and forward-looking policy measures to improve New Jersey. Currently, Carol is working on comprehensive efforts to modernize our digital infrastructure to improve access to state government services and bring 5G technology to all residents to close the digital divide. Additionally, Carol is working on new initiatives to combat human trafficking, improve our infrastructure, ensure mental health services are accessible, strengthen cybersecurity protections, foster policies to help small businesses and make New Jersey more affordable and transparent.

Assemblywoman Murphy serves as Vice Chair on the Assembly Judiciary Committee and is a member of the Assembly Budget Committee, the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee in addition to her role as a member of the senior leadership team in the majority caucus. Carol serves the Chairwoman of the Mount Laurel Township Municipal Utility Authority. Additionally, Carol served on the Executive Committee of the National Conference for State Legislatures (NCSL), serves as co-chair for the NCSL sub-committee on State-Federal Policy and serves on the Executive Board and as the New Jersey State Director of the National Foundation for Women Legislators. Carol also serves as a co-chair to the American Irish National Conference of State Legislative Caucus. Assemblywoman Murphy is also a member of numerous non-profit boards which include New Jersey Council of Humanities (Board Member), Burlington County Military Advisory Committee (Lifetime Member), Alice Paul Institute at Paulsdale (former Board Member) and the Girl Scouts (Delegate for Burlington County). Assemblywoman Murphy and her husband Michael Muller live in the Rancocas section of Mount Laurel with their cat, Lexington.
