Join APC for our next installment of Champions of Equality. We will be joined by Roberta Francis and APC advancement and civic engagement manager Molly Gonzales for a conversation about the Equal Rights Amendment.

The Equal Rights Amendment is the only proposed amendment to the Constitution to satisfy all necessary requirements for ratification that remains unpublished. After the 1982 time-limit passed without the ERA collecting the necessary 38 total states for ratification, feminists across the country embarked on ambitious new research projects, strategy sessions, and advocacy campaigns to best understand the amendment’s path forward. 

For the past 50 years, Roberta Francis has fought on the frontlines of such campaigns serving as the Director of the NJ Division on Women from 1990-94 and as a Founding Chair of the ERA Task Force of the National Council of Women’s Organization’s. Join us for a discussion between Bobbie Francis and our advancement and civic engagement manager Molly Gonzales on what happened after the ERA failed to meet the 1982 deadline set by congress, how the post-’82 strategies were devised, and where the ERA sits today. We will learn about Bobbie’s monumental career advocating for gender equality, the moments that served as her first feminist click, and the path forward to getting the 28th amendment published into the Constitution.
